PCCW Named Best National Regional Operator at World Communications Awards 2006
Hong Kong, November 29, 2006 - PCCW, the largest and most comprehensive provider of communications services in Hong Kong and one of Asia's leading players in Information and Communications Technologies (ICT), has been named "Best National Regional Operator" at this year's World Communications Awards (WCA) in London. The Company was also named as a finalist in the "Best Managed Services" category.
The World Communications Awards are considered to be the most prestigious awards in the global communications industry. This year's event drew a record 250 entries. The judging panel was chaired by Kenneth Cukier, Technology correspondent for The Economist, and included 12 established industry analysts and experts.
According to the judges, the Best National Regional Operator category has traditionally been highly competitive, and this year was no different. The judges' citation said PCCW won the award for its combination of excellent regional presence, innovative product set and good customer coverage. They also noted that PCCW is the most efficient fixed line broadband provider in Hong Kong, and leads in IPTV globally. They further noted that customer testimonials seen by the judging panel demonstrated how important PCCW's strong partnerships across China were to PCCW's enterprise customers.
Deputy Chairman and Group Managing Director Jack So said: "PCCW is proud to be recognized through this prestigious international award. We are leading the world in IPTV innovation. Our now TV has become the largest commercially deployed pay-TV service in the world. In just three years of operation, we have rapidly attracted a large viewer base with rich content and unique interactive features."
now TV has an installed customer base of 700,000. PCCW had approximately 998,000 total broadband access lines in service by the end of June 2006, up 5 percent from 953,000 at the end of December 2005.
The high-quality, value-added services of now TV and the online music streaming service MOOV are proving effective in encouraging customer loyalty.
"PCCW is optimistic about continued growth locally and abroad. In addition to IPTV, we are confident that our reliable and secure global IP infrastructure - with coverage in over 70 countries and 700 cities --is well placed to supplement the regional deployment of our services and enable expansion of our footprint globally," said Mr. So.
The WCA success adds to a growing list of awards and accolades for PCCW this year. The company was recently named "Best Telecom Managed Service Provider" at the ComputerWorld Hong Kong Awards 2006. PCCW was also awarded "Next Generation Network Service Provider of the Year in Asia Pacific 2006" by Frost & Sullivan and given the award for "Outstanding Innovation" by Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) in October 2006.
